Matthew Jerome Suhey, beloved husband, father, grandfather, former Penn State football player, and Chicago Bears Super Bowl champion, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2026.
Known to many as Chicago Bears #26, Matt Suhey leaves behind a remarkable legacy built not only through his accomplishments in football and business, but also through the love, generosity, integrity, and friendship he shared with the people around him.
Remembering Matthew Jerome Suhey
Matt’s greatest source of pride was his family. He was the devoted husband of Donna, his wife of 38 years, and the loving father of three children: Joey, Gianna, Allison, Matt, and Scotty. He was also a cherished grandfather to seven grandchildren: Quinn, Matthew (MJ), Tess, Teddy, Cameron, Casey, and Charlie.
His grandchildren affectionately called him “Higgies,” a loving tribute to his mother’s maiden name, Higgins.
For Matt, family was at the heart of everything. While his accomplishments made him well known, it was the relationships he built and the love he gave to those closest to him that ultimately defined his life.
From State College to the Chicago Bears
Matt grew up in State College, Pennsylvania, as the youngest of seven children. His passion and talent for football eventually led him to Penn State University, where he played college football.
He later embarked on a ten-year career with the Chicago Bears, becoming part of the team’s storied history and a Super Bowl champion.
His connection with Chicago continued long after his playing days. Matt fell in love with the city and its people, eventually making Chicago home for himself and his family.
For Bears fans, his legacy will forever be connected to the famous #26 jersey and his contributions to one of the most celebrated periods in the franchise’s history.
A Successful Career Beyond Football
Although Matt Suhey was celebrated for his accomplishments on the football field, his professional life extended well beyond sports.
He established himself in business as an entrepreneur known for his integrity, determination, and relentless work ethic. His career demonstrated the same qualities that characterized his football journey: discipline, commitment, and a willingness to work hard.
Yet, despite his professional achievements, those closest to Matt remembered him for much more than what he accomplished professionally.
